William Gordon McCabe, the son of an Episcopal clergyman, was a first-year student at the University of Virginia when the War Between the States broke out. His withdrawal from the university followed close on the heels of Virginia's withdrawal from the Union, and he served in the Army of Northern Virginia throughout the War. After the War was over, he returned to his native state and became a teacher and a poet.
