Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr., gained fame and recognition as both a physician and a poet and was the father of Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., who served in the 20th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, better known as "The Harvard Regiment". The junior Holmes went on to pursue a career as a jurist and became a noted figure in American post-War judicial circles.
